Whole-Person Health: The Mind, Body and Spirit Connection

In the late 1990’s I fell in love.  Not with a person, but an idea.  The idea that medicine should be more about whole-person health, taking into account the intricate connections between our mind, body and spirit.  Now, I didn’t come up with this idea all on my own.  No, it was, of all things, a quote from a Robin Williams movie called Patch Adams that starting the wheels turning in my head.  “You treat a disease, you win, you lose.  You treat a person, I guarantee you, you’ll win no matter what the outcome.”

Almost twenty years later, it seems that our healthcare system still focuses solely on either the physical or mental aspects of our health, and discounts our spiritual needs all together.  How can we be expected to lead happy and healthy lives when these connections are…well…disconnected.

According to Luis Biazotto, Health Director for the RESTART Celebrating Health Wellness and Lifestyle Program, sponsored by Wellness On The Go, “You cannot divide spirit.  You cannot divide your mind and you cannot divide your body.  Everything is connected.  It’s all one piece.”

The RESTART Program, which was most recently held at Honor’s Haven Resort & Spa, in upstate New York, May 15-22, 2016 focuses on the importance of sustaining whole-person health through education, motivation and worship.   The components covered in this 8 Day/7 Night program include health advice, mental health lectures, exercise classes, aqua aerobics, devotionals and nutrition.

With roughly 34% of the population in the United States being 45 years of age or older, the importance of following a healthy diet is critical. The RESTART Program teaches participants how to prevent diseases such as heart disease, stroke, diabetes and certain cancers just by eating right and maintaining a healthy weight. What is unique about this program is that it promotes a holistic approach to health that is 100% scripture based; bridging the gap between our spiritual and physical identities– significantly improving our quality of life, our work and our relationships.

Additionally, program leaders don’t just show participants how to achieve a healthier lifestyle, they motivate them to change their lives for the better by helping them to recognize and understand the connection between mind, body and spirit.
